As much as I like the new MacBooks and MBPs and the decisions they represent, the drop of FireWire 400 is not acceptable. Without FW400 I can:
- no longer connect my Canon HV 20 Camcorder (Mid 2007)
- no longer connect my two external FW hard drives
- no longer connect in FW target disc mode
Dropping the second FW400 port on the iMac was a major mistake already, but dropping FW400 entirely made it harder for switchers who own FireWire hardware. It also puts Apple in the bizarre situation where the company does not offer a mobile Mac for video people anymore.
Just because major revenue is made with those 90% of customers not needing FireWire it doesn’t mean you should drop the 10%. In a perfect world, iMacs and MBP would have 3x USB, 2x FW400 and 1x FW800. That is what freedom means.
Best regards
